HILLIER THAN THOU TIME TRIAL/Century/Fiddler's Elbow Metric/Belvidere Boogie

Event Report for Sunday, September 23, 2001
by Philip Apruzzese

Nearly 50 of the best climbers in NJ and surrounding states traveled to scenic Warren & Hunterdon Counties for the toughest century ride in the Northeast, Hillier Than Thou. This year's event was again based at Camp Bernie YMCA but was postponed one week from its original date due to the tragic events of September 11.

Thirty-eight event registrations were received online via Active.com. Day of registrations totaled 27 with a few additional mail-in and hand-delivered ones. Our difficult decision to postpone was met with unanimous rider agreement even from those who were disappointed and unable to ride due to other commitments. A full refund was offered with the option to donate to the September 11 relief fund. Almost all of those unable to make the event chose to donate their refund to the fund. Our thanks is extended to these individuals.

TIME TRIAL:

Twenty seven riders finished within the 8 hour scoring period with a new course record of 5:40 set by Sandiway Fong. Greg Turner of Somerville Cyclery (CJBC Sponsor bike shop) was 2nd overall with 5:54. Michelle Fontana rode the full Century and was scored 1st in the Women's Fiddler's Elbow Metric Time Trial.

The riders agreed by acclimation to donate their cash awards to the September 11th fund. Our thanks is also extended to these individuals. My company, Schering Plough will be matching these donations @ 100%.

As in the past volunteer help was vital to the continued success and reputation of this event. Thanks to all for your help…hopefully next year more club members will help eliminating the double duty and double shifts.
