I follow local school issues closely, am active in the PTA, and occasionally serve on school committees relating to curriculum and planning.
I earned a high-school (Preparatory Division) certificate at the Longy School of Music, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and play the piano, violin, and viola. In high school, I played the viola in the senior orchestra of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. As an undergrad at Harvard, I played the viola in the Bach Society Orchestra and the Harvard-Radcliffe Gilbert and Sullivan Players orchestra.
Currently, I supervise my children's musical education and volunteer with the New Jersey Youth Symphony (NJYS). Roger plays the trombone in the NJYS Youth Symphony, and Emily sings in the NJYS Vocal Ensemble and plays the flute in the NJYS Flute Choir.
Before getting interested in computer science toward the end of college, I planned a career in linguistics or psychology of language, and I still find languages fascinating.
I'm happiest when surrounded by high mountains, which are unfortunately in short supply in New Jersey! My most exciting trip was backpacking in Denali National Park and Glacier Bay National Monument in Alaska. My favorite place in the U.S.A. is Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
